However, it's important to remember that since they are made of human hair, they can incur damage just like your own hair. To maintain their condition, start by brushing or combing the extensions to remove any tangles. Always apply a heat protectant spray before using any hot tools. Unlike your natural hair, extensions do not benefit from the scalp's natural oils. Therefore, it's crucial to apply a deep conditioning treatment to the extensions at least once a month. This is particularly important if you frequently use heat styling tools, as it helps keep the extensions in optimal condition and prolongs their lifespan. Additionally, trimming the ends of your extensions regularly, just like your own hair, can help reduce damage. The less heat styling you do, the longer your extensions will last.

Washing Your Hair Extensions

The frequency of washing your hair extensions depends on how often you use them. Generally, it's recommended to wash them every 4-6 weeks. Unlike natural hair, extensions do not receive natural oils and thus require added moisture and conditioning. Washing them too often can strip them of their natural moisture and color, leading to dryness. When you do wash them, it helps to remove product build-up from hairsprays and other styling products. Always follow up with a deep conditioning treatment and rinse with cold water to maintain their softness and silkiness. For example, transforming dark extensions to a platinum blonde is not recommended due to the extensive processing required. If you need to change the color of your extensions, professional assistance is crucial. It's generally safer to dye extensions to a darker shade rather than a lighter one, as the hair has already been through several processing methods before reaching you. Bleaching can significantly damage the extensions, so opting for semi-permanent hair dye is advisable. Semi-permanent dyes are less harmful and do not dry out the hair as much as permanent dyes.
